Apple Plans to Equip Mac Computers With its Own Chips from 2021

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Apple plans to start selling Mac computers with its own main processor from next year, and currently Mac computers are also designed based on the chips used on iPhones and iPad. According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is developing three Mac processors based on the A14 processor for the next iPhone, which means that Apple will transfer more Mac product lines from the current supplier Intel. Apple started using Intel processors in 2006, and all Mac computers started using Intel chips in 2007. Since then, Intel has started to produce chips for other Apple products, such as the modem chip for the iPhone.

Apple ’s modem chips have always relied on external suppliers, which is a key component in connecting devices such as the iPhone to wireless data networks. In order to manufacture its own chips, Apple bought most of Intel ’s modem in last July for $1 billion and resolved long-standing legal disputes with supplier Qualcomm over the latter ’s patent licensing practices. Apple’s Mac computers had revenue of US $ 7.16 billion last quarter, and Intel’s PC division, including modem chip sales, had revenue of US $10 billion last quarter. According to Bloomberg News in April 2018, Apple plans to use its own chips on Mac computers as early as 2020.

Apple and Intel did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
What do you think of Apple's preparations to get rid of Intel and produce chips by itself?
