hydrogen-powered super yacht

Bill Gates' investment in environmental protection technology has clearly become a more compelling symbol than his wealth. The former Microsoft president ordered Sinot ’s Aqua, the world ’s first “super yacht” based on hydrogen fuel cells. The main feature is that it relies on two 1MW engines powered by super-cooled hydrogen tanks. The 370-foot yacht, worth about 644 million US dollars, has all luxury facilities, including five decks, space for 14 guests and 31 crew members, and even a gym.

The maximum speed of the Aqua is 17 knots (19.6 mph), which is not fast, but the 3,750 mile range (endurance) should be enough to sail across the ocean. But this boat is not completely environmentally friendly. Because there are very few hydrogen refueling stations by the dock, Aqua will have a diesel engine to help it reach the port, that is, the alternative engine can not be used as a response to the endurance. After all, no one wants to drive a yacht without power to stop in the vast sea, which can be different from the car driving in the lane.

Aqua is not expected to reach the ocean until 2024. It is easy to criticize this purchase. Can't the funds used to build this yacht be used to fund electric vehicle and hydrogen-powered vehicle projects? These projects may have a greater impact than a yacht. However, just like Gates ’investment in solar power startup Heliogen, this may also be a symbolic support for zero-emission technology-in this case, it proves that the power boat does not have to cause great damage to the environment.
